A (2019·海口市琼山华侨中学高三月考)
I work with Volunteers for Wildlife, a rescue and education organization at Bailey Arboretum in Locust Valley. Trying to help injured, displaced or sick creatures can be heartbreaking; survival is never certain. However, when it works, it is simply beautiful. I got a rescue call from a woman in Muttontown. She had found a young owl(猫头鹰) on the ground. When I arrived, I saw a 2-to 3-week-old owl. It had already been placed in a carrier for safety. I examined the chick(雏鸟) and it seemed fine. If I could locate the nest, I might have been able to put it back, but no luck. My next work was to construct a nest and anchor it in a tree. The homeowner was very helpful. A wire basket was found. I put some pine branches into the basket to make this nest safe and comfortable. I placed the chick in the nest, and it quickly calmed down. Now all that was needed were the parents, but they were absent. I gave the homeowner a recording of the hunger screams of owl chicks. These advertise the presence of chicks to adults; they might also encourage our chick to start calling as well. I gave the owner as much information as possible and headed home to see what news the night might bring.
A nervous night to be sure, but sometimes the spirits of nature smile on us all! The homeowner called to say that the parents had responded to the recordings. I drove over and saw the chick in the nest looking healthy and active. And it was accompanied in the nest by the greatest sight of all — LUNCH! The parents had done their duty and would probably continue to do so. 1.What is unavoidable in the author’s rescue work according to paragraph 1? A.Efforts made in vain. B.Getting injured in his work. C.Feeling uncertain about his future. D.Creatures forced out of their homes. 2.Why was the author called to Muttontown? A.To rescue a woman. B.To take care of a woman. C.To look at a baby owl. D.To cure a young owl. 3.What made the chick calm down? A.A new nest. B.Some food. C.A recording. D.Its parents. 4.How would the author feel about the outcome of the event? A.It’s unexpected. B.It’s beautiful. C.It’s humorous.
D.It’s discouraging.
B (2021·广东华南师大附中高三月考)
John was waiting for the girl whose heart he knew, but whose face he didn’t, the girl with the rose. Thirteen months ago, in a Florida library he took a book off the shelf and found himself attracted by the notes in the margin (页边). The soft handwriting reflected a thoughtful soul and insightful mind. In front of the book, he discovered the previous owner’s name, Miss Hollis Maynell. With time and effort, he located her address. He wrote her a letter introducing himself and inviting her to correspond. During the next year and one month, the two grew to know each other through the mail. A romance was developing. John requested a photograph, but she refused. She felt that if he really cared, it wouldn’t matter what she looked like. Later they scheduled their first meeting - 7:00 p.m. at Grand Central Station in New York. “You’ll recognize me,” she wrote, “by the red rose I’ll be wearing on my coat.” So at 7:00 he was in the station looking for the girl with the red rose. A young woman in a green suit was coming towards him, her figure long and slim and her eyes were blue as flowers. Almost uncontrollably he made one step closer to her, and just at this moment he saw Hollis Maynell - a woman well past 40. The girl was walking quickly away. He felt as though he was at a loss, so eager was his desire to follow her, and yet so deep was his longing for the woman whose spirit had truly accompanied him and upheld his own. He did not hesitate. He squared his shoulders and said, “I’m John, and you must be Miss Maynell. I am so glad you could meet me; may I take you to dinner?” The woman smiled, “I don’t know what this is about, son,” she answered, “but the young lady in the green suit begged me to wear this rose on my coat. And she said if you were to ask me out to dinner, I should tell you she is waiting for you in the restaurant across the street. She said it was some kind of test!” It’s not difficult to admire wisdom. The true nature of a heart is seen in its response to the unattractive. 5.What happened to John thirteen months ago?
A.He was touched by a girl’s notes in a book. B.He was waiting for a girl outside a library. C.He happened to read a thoughtful and insightful book. D.He made acquaintance with Miss Hollis Maynell. 6.Which of the following is true about Hollis Maynell? A.She was just the lady John was going to meet. B.She was a middle-aged woman who was unattractive. C.She happened to pass by the Grand Central Station. D.She was required to wear a rose on her coat. 7.If John hadn’t walked up to the lady wearing a red rose, he would _______. A.have had the dinner with a beautiful lady instead B.have failed to meet the girl he fell in love with C.have found that he was fooled by Miss Maynell D.have followed the young woman in a green suit 8.In writing the passage, the author intends to _______. A.tell us a romantic story between two young persons B.show one’s spirit matters more than his appearance C.show that one’s response to unattractive shows his heart D.how a thoughtful soul and insightful mind can be reflected

Being a teenager is no cakewalk. Like the characters in these books, teens might also be mourning a first big loss, getting a handle on shifting mental health, or feeling isolated from peers. These inspiring books help them promote positive thinking. 10 Things I Can See from Here
by Carrie Mac Maeve experiences severe anxiety, so much of her headspace is devoted to imagining worst-case scenes. Her troubles are worsened when she’s sent to live with her dad (an alcoholic), pregnant stepmom, and twin stepbrothers in Vancouver — a situation with a whole new set of stressors. Maeve has a lot on her plate, but she’s also determined to show up for the people in her life. Dancing at the Pity Party
by Tyler Feder Tyler Feder was in college when she lost her mother to cancer. In this bittersweet memoir, Feder celebrates her mother’s life and also recounts the long and ongoing journey of grief — from the first physician appointments to sitting the funeral — and trying to create some
resemblance among peers who just didn’t get it. Sincere and often humorous, Feder’s perspective is related to teens who’ve experienced grief and valuable for anyone navigating a difficult experience. Born a Crime
by Trevor Noah Trevor Noah records his coming-of-age in South Africa under and after racial separation. Born to a white father and black mother (a union punishable by law), Noah was kept mostly hidden indoors during his early childhood. How the future Daily Show host maintained his wisdom and adaptability in a country enduring the aftershocks of colonialism and survived typical teen dangers of, say, dating in high school — are the subject of this celebrated bestseller. Take in the Good
by Gina Biegel, illustrated by Breanna Chambers Building on research in the brain’s negative preference, Gina Biegel offers an activity journal with art projects, writing instructions, and exercises to help teenagers “take in the good” — that is, retrain their

Competition is all around us and it makes the strong stronger and the weak weaker. It can also teach us how to survive in a fast-paced and stressful world. 16.. How many of us have seen young boys weeping because their teams didn’t win inter-school tournament? How many of us have seen young teenagers cheat just to win? 17. So it’s important to develop healthy competition among children. When it comes to encouraging healthy competition among children, the first thing to do is set goals for them to stick to. 18. Since children may be easily affected by wrong ideas from popular media and the Internet, it’s up to you to develop the right kind of spirit in them. Team spirit will help them grow into human beings who aren’t easily annoyed by small losses or too excited by victories. 19. So give them examples where family members refused to cheat to win. 20.. When they take an exam, don’t ask about how much they expect to score; instead, ask what they wrote about. If your son played a cricket match at school, don’t ask him whether his team won or lost; ask him how many runs he scored and encourage him to score higher next time instead. When you let your children know that you’re more interested in how they performed rather than whether they lost or won, they will surely try to better themselves. A.However, you mustn’t push them too hard and burden them with too high a goal B.We should also encourage healthy competition among children C.These are the effects of unhealthy competition D.In addition, they may also not want to adopt just any method to win, like cheating or lying E.Care more about children’s performance rather than the results in a sports match F.However, children can be hit by competition G.Sending your children the right signals is also important

“Once there was a ship travelling on the tough sea and on the ship there was a pair of couple. All of a sudden, the ship met with an accident and the couple had no choice but to run to the life boat without delay. After reaching there, they realized that there was space only for one person. At that very moment, the husband pushed his wife behind him and jumped onto the lifeboat himself, leaving his wife standing on the sinking ship, shouting something desperately to her husband eyes filled with tears.” The teacher stopped her story-telling and asked her students, “Guys, guess what it was that she shouted.” Most students answered. “I hate you!” After listening to all this reply, the teacher glanced through the whole class again and noticed that there was a boy sitting silently throughout. Then she asked him the same question. The boy answered, “I believe she would have shouted-Take care of our child.” Listening to his remarks, the teacher was surprised and asked the boy doubtfully. “Have you heard of this story before?” Shaking his head, the boy said softly and sadly, “No, I haven’t. But that’s what my mother said to my father before she died of a deadly disease.” Moved and feeling sad, the teacher replied. “Your answer is absolutely right!” Then she continued, “Let’s take up the story. The ship sank eventually and the husband went home and brought up their daughter alone. Many years later after the death of the man, their daughter was tidying up all his belongings when she found his diary. In his diary she found that when her parents were on the ship, her mother had already been diagnosed (诊断) with advanced illness and at the critical moment, the father rushed to the only chance of survival.”
